Mr. Snippers Has New Home

YAY!!!! Mr. Snippers went to his new home this morning. What a great Christmas gift for him and for me. We were worried because the lady who took him has two small dogs. We introduced them to him one at a time, and with each one he went right up to them and loved on them, sniffed them a lot of course, and even rolled over on his back like he wanted to play. I had him at my house last night and he hissed at one of my cats when I tried to introduce them, but he was great with the dogs. I was so amazed and it felt kind of like a sign that this was the right place. I would like to introduce you to Mr. Snippers, the sweetest little kitty you'll ever meet. He has taken up residence at a local beauty salon run by my friend Christopher (Mr. Christopher's Zen Salon). He was very skinny and dirty when he showed up, but is looking much better now. Problem is, he is at least partially blind; not that he lets that slow him down much.

Mr. Snippers loves to lay in the warm sun, but then what cat doesn't. He is super friendly and just loves to be cuddled and loved on. And what a loud purr he has; so relaxing.

The shop is right on the road, and we do worry about Mr. Snippers, especially with his sight being what it is. Christopher cant' take him home since he has a small place and already lives with two dogs. I can't take him since I already have 8 cats myself. Someone has offered to take him home and let him live in their barn if we get him neutered, but with his eyesight, our goal is to hopefully find him and inside home. There is an organization in St. Pauls, NC (Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary), but they are full right now (84 cats...WOW) and can't take him. But, they are going to help me find a home through their contacts and Facebook page. They have been very successful in this type of thing, and I'm so glad they have agreed to help out.

Problem is, we need to get him neutered and checked out first. We need to get his shots done, find out just how blind he is and make sure he is negative for all the bad diseases and stuff. I got an estimate from my vet's office (Stewart's Mountain View Animal Hospital) of close to $300 for everything. So, I have set up a fund raising Chip-In.

I don't normally as for money on this blog, but this is a special case for me. This little guy has totally melted my heart. He has such a great personality and I would so love to get him a good home for Christmas, or at least the new year. So, if you can help in any little way, I would so appreciate it. Cat Overpopulation

Ever wonder why there are so many cats in the world? I learned some interesting facts today. A cat can have up to five litters of kittens a year. FIVE!!! And they can go into their first heat at four months of age.

I got some of these facts from this FAQ sheet I found online: http://www.sacanimal.org/cat_reproduction_FAQ.pdf. Do the research. There are plenty of resources out there. Talk to your vet even. Just get the facts. Knowledge is power as they say.

And please spay/neuter your pets. Way too many die in overcrowded shelters or alone on the streets every day. Be the solution, not part of the problem.

Your pets will thank you for it.

Handsome Jack

I am so lucky that this pet sitting gig has allowed me to surround myself with some of the most handsome boys you've ever seen. Jack is one of them.

He may be handsome, but when he's outside, Jack does not like to be held. I think he's afraid I'm going to take him back in the house. He gets outside time while I take care of his litter boxes and food/water bowls, then it's back in at the end of my visit. Of course, I sometimes take a bit of extra time and hang out with him for a bit, enjoying the sunshine and peaceful atmosphere where he lives, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Jack loves to wander through the woods, watching for birds, bugs and whatever else he can find. His eyes are always wide open, and he's always alert to the least little movement in the leaves.

Sometimes Jack is sitting in this window when I get there, like he just knew I was coming and is waiting for me. He's not often standing up in it like this though. He's more often just peering through the space at the bottom of the blinds and all you can see are his eyes staring out at you. Would be pretty creepy if I didn't know he was such a sweetheart.

I've been visiting Jack twice a week for several months now, but those visits are about to come to an end. I've grown very fond of this boy and will for sure miss seeing him every week.

Emma & Gracie

I love all my doggie and kitty clients, but Emma & Gracie have a special place in my heart. They were my first two regular sitting clients and their mom is a friend, so I kinda feel more like the aunt that comes in to spoil them than their pet sitter. :-)

This is Gracie, the Beagle. I adore Beagles. I don't know what it is about them, but they are just so flipping cute. And Gracie is definitely no exception. She is a bit neurotic, but come on, who among us isn't?

This is Gracie's sister, Emma. She is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. She definitely loves her rawhide bones, and here she is eying Gracie while keeping a protective paw on her new one. You can tell it's a new one because it's still in one piece. She makes quick work of those things.

Kinda dark, but this is one of my favorite pictures of the girls. They were in the window watching me leave. Made me feel kinda bad, leaving them like that. But, I had others to take care of, and they kept each other company until I returned for my next visit. They're really great girls and we have a lot of fun.

Cats and Stuff

Well, time has flown by and April is almost here. Spring is in...well...full spring I guess...but you wouldn't know it from the weather around here. It's cold and a bit of snow is falling here and there in Critter Sitter Land. So, I'm going to add some sunshine to this otherwise gray and dreary day.

Today, I'm going to share some photos of my own resident cats. Don't get me wrong, I adore dogs as well and I like to say I get my dog fix through the pet sitting. I just don't have the space for a dog here, and the cats weren't actually brought in by choice. They just started showing up. I think there's a large neon sign on top of my house proclaiming that a sucker lives here and constantly gives out free food.

I do have a personal blog where I often talk about my cats, among other things. It is called Rambling Thoughts and Thoughtful Ramblings. Stop in and check it out if you'd like.

These two are the latest additions to my group. This is an older picture, they're still kittens here (are about a year and 9 months now). Hope is the one eating and the other is Google, her brother. Now, before you get any ideas, he was actually named because of his eyes. He has such big googly eyes. I tried to find indoor homes for them, but to no avail. I would still love to find one. They really deserve to be inside kitties, and I think they would transition over to that just fine. (I already have 4 inside.) But for now, they are outside and enjoying it immensely.

This is Tango. He's about 6 years old now. He used to belong to my neighbor, but one day just decided to stay over here instead. I have a great neighbor, and I'm really glad he didn't get upset about that. Tango's a good kid and I adore him. Always have. He has a great personality.

This is Muffin. She just showed up one day about three years ago and never left. I always said I wouldn't have an outside cat, then she came along. We think she's about 5 or so now. She was spayed already, so had a home at some point, but for some reason decided life was better here. That summer, she followed me all around the yard when I'd pick blackberries. She likes to make you think she's not a big fan of Google or Hope, but then you catch her playing with them in the yard. She's turning into a great little auntie for them.

That's just a few of our crowd. Kittens have shown up at my door, helped along I'm sure by people who know my reputation for taking care of them. One feral cat has been here for about as long as Muffin and still won't let me touch her...or him. But, I am able to get closer now, so there is hope. I've taken cats to the local shelter where they've gone on to good homes, and my husband and I have had the wonderful experience of bottle-raising a litter of six, which is where our four indoor kitties came from.

I love cats and dogs....animals of all kinds actually. We get the occasional raccoon and opossum on the porch at night, grabbing whatever tidbits the cats happen to leave behind. I've taken care of all kinds of animals ranging from the usual cats and dogs to horses and roosters. And one thing I've noticed, they all have their own personalities and they're all unique.

Another Rosie

Putting the spotlight on another Rosie I recently sat for. This one is a sweet little kitty. She's 15-years-old and still frisky. She was a bit wary of me the first time I came to visit, but after that started following me around and watching me closely. Maybe she was just guarding her house.

This is where I found Rosie on my first visit, curled up on the couch.

After that initial visit, Rosie hung out with me a bit. This is her on the banister watching me as I headed downstairs to clean out her litter box.

I always get nervous when a cat jumps up on a railing or stair banister, but I know that's just my own fear of heights talking. They know what they're doing and have great balance.

I hope you and all your furry or feathered friends have a great holiday. May the new year bring us all peace, love and lots of joy.

Buddha and Rosie

What a busy summer we had. Some of the clients we added to our roster were summer visitors to the mountains, and we're hoping to see all of them again next year.

Here are two such visitors; Buddha and Rosie.

Buddha's white feet are so cute.

And check out Rosie's sweater. Her "grandma" makes them for her.

Buddha is a handsome boy, and he knows it.

Sometimes they even snuggle together on the doggie bed.

And sometimes they don't. (Check out the laser eyes. And you thought only cats had those.)

Buddha gave me lots of kisses, and Rosie likes to be carried around when we'd go outside. They're both such good dogs, and I really hope I get to see them again next summer.

Still Here

Well, Tri-County Critter Sitters is still here, albeit we're feeling a bit beat up lately. Besides family members who have been besieged with various medical issues of late, we also lost one of the adorable kittens we have been raising.

Yahoo was a true beauty, and we were really looking forward to seeing the gloriously beautiful adult cat we could tell he was going to become. But it wasn't meant to be. He went to the Rainbow Bridge on March 1st, and we're still heartbroken about it. He will forever be missed.

Even as we continue to mourn Yahoo, we continue to push forward in our efforts to spread the idea of adopting from your local animal shelter. June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month, and as we always do, if you adopt a cat from your local animal shelter this month, we will give you 5% off your first booking. That's on top of the 5% you get if you're a first time client, and other first time client discounts we will discuss at your initial consultation.

Three Kitties Looking For Homes

These three cuties have been with us since the end of August, when they just "appeared" out of no where. (I'm sure they had some help in that department.) We think they were around 2 months old then, so would be about 8 months old now.

This is Hope. We were hoping she was a boy, and are now hoping for a safe & warm indoor home for her. Hence the name. She really hates walking through the snow, but insists on following when I go outside in it. She isn't much for being held right now, but loves to be petted and sits next to you for attention. She has been spayed and is up-to-date on her shots.

This is Google, Hope's brother. He is also looking for a warm indoor home. He looks like he's winking here because he had a mild eye infection. A few days of an antibiotic ointment and he's good as new. He will put up with being held for a few minutes, but much prefers to sit next to you and be loved. Google is neutered and up-to-date on his shots.

And this little beauty is the other brother, Yahoo. He is different from his siblings in that he loves to be held. This is the most loving little guy. He even will ride on your shoulder, which he did a lot when it snowed, and he wanted to be with me in the yard. He is also neutered, up-to-date on his shots and looking for a warm indoor home.

I'd love it if these three could stay together, but I also know that's near impossible. I will be satisfied when they find good furever homes where they can be loved and give love in return. They are very loving little kittens and are available for adoption for a small donation to Mitchell County Animal Rescue here in Spruce Pine. (They helped get the boys neutered and even gave food when it was needed.)

I would keep these guys myself, but already have 4 indoor kitties of my own. There just isn't enough room. I am doing the best I can with them, making sure they have lots of human contact, plenty of food, good shelter. I was afraid at first that I wouldn't be able to prepare them to be good pets for someone. I knew I had done good when each one of them, at different times, looked up at me, then bumped their forehead to mine. That means a lot coming from a cat.

Chamber of Commerce Membership

Well, so much time has passed. We still have those three adorable kittens in residence here, and are still looking for good homes for them. I will post pictures and info on them later.

As of last week, Tri-County Critter Sitters is now a member of the Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce, and we are listed in their directory. I know this will help us get out there and spread the love to as many pets as we possibly can.

That's the news for now. Take care of yourself, and your pets. And as Bob Barker always said: "Help control the pet population. Have your pet spayed or neutered."

Kittens Up For Adoption

Tri-County Critter Sitters is looking for a furever home for these three beautiful kittens. They are between 5 and 6 months old, and were abandoned here nearly 4 months ago. They are all very loving and really need to be inside kitties. (Being we have 4 indoor cats here already, there really is no way we can keep these inside.)

This is Hope. She is a stand-out from her brothers as she is short-haired and of course feels she is a queen in the making. She loves to play with sticks and string, but her real favorite past time is being petted. She's not much for being picked up and held (and hates being put in a carrier), but loves attention and will often sit next to you or even on your lap. She has been spayed and is up-to-date on all her shots.

Google is our little adventurer. He loves to look around and explore, and it's hard to get a picture of him sitting still. He puts up with being picked up and held for a few minutes, and loves to get in your lap and sit for a bit. He's a stocky little fella with some thick, beautiful fur. He is neutered and up to date on all his shots as well.

Yahoo is a gorgeous little boy who sometimes wants to be picked up and held. He adores sitting next to you and being petted, and a lap is pretty good as well. He's pretty active, but not as much as his siblings. He's a real affectionate boy who likes to settle down and watch the world around him. Like his brother and sister, he is neutered and up-to-date on his shots.

National Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month

November is National Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month. Here is a press release from Petfinder.com that explains:

“Think of a pet that is already trained and doesn’t chew or scratch everything in sight--a pet who will love you unconditionally,” said Kim Saunders, Petfinder.com’s Director of Public Relations. “That’s what you get when you adopt a senior pet.”

Some people worry that a senior pet comes with problems, but according to Hazel Blumberg-McKee of Tallahassee, FL, there are no disadvantages. “In most cases they’ve had a home and they want one again.” She adopted eight-and-a-half-year old Sadie, and has never regretted it. “An older animal is easier to deal with. And Sadie is still playful. She plays fetch and gallops all over the place.”

At animal shelters and rescue groups everywhere, there are loving, healthy senior pets like Sadie, looking for that one special home to cherish them for the rest of their life, and they don’t ask for much: just a warm place to sleep, good meals and plenty of love.

Mocha is a Terrier Mix from the Avery County Humane Society. She is part of the training program they run through Mountain View Correctional Institution. National Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month

October is National Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. Because of illness in my family, I have not had time to update as I usually like to. So, there is a lot of ground to cover in honor of this month. Better get started.

McCoy is a beautiful terrier mix who has been at the Mitchell County shelter in Spruce Pine since April. He really needs a good home. According to the write-up on Pet Finder, "McCoy is a very interesting character. He seems to be so intelligent. He listens well, can sit, walks on a leash contently and just looks at you like he knows exactly what's going on. McCoy is super cool looking too. He has "whiskers" and a "mustache". He is definitely one of our favorites here at the shelter. McCoy was born around June 18 of 2008." Get more info and check out more photos of McCoy here.

Or how about Harmony, a Lab/Hound mix who is currently staying with the friendly folks at the Avery County shelter in Newland. She is about 4 months old and has been spayed. She's a cute little doll just looking for a loving home to grow up in. You can get more info oh Harmoney here.

Yancey County Animal Shelter - Cats

It has been nearly a month since I last posted, and I have to apologize for that. My husband has been ill, and I just haven't had much time to myself. But, hopefully he's on the road to recovery, as bumpy as that road is, and I am back to posting regularly.

And for today's post, I'd like to again feature some cats from the Yancey County Humane Society's animal shelter.

This is KitKat. Isn't she a cutie. She is a domestic shorthair currently residing at the Yancey County Animal Shelter in Burnsville. She's had all her shots, is already spayed and is declawed (so you'll want to keep this one inside).

Daily Visit Minimum 25-30 Mins

Usually scheduled at least 2 weeks at a time, but can be less. Great for those whose work day keeps them away from home for long hours or those who have new pets that are still getting used to their environment. (Also works well for those with sick pets.)

Drop In 5 Minutes or less

Short drop in to transfer keys (pick up or drop off), check iron/stove, turn off sprinkler system, close windows, etc.

Visits scheduled before 6am or after 10pm will incur an added $5 fee, unless other arrangements have been made.

Refunds & Cancellations

We request at least three days notice in the event of a cancellation. If your visit is cancelled with less than three days notice, there will be a cancellation fee of $15 due.

Tri-County Critter Sitters proudly supports spay/neuter programs. So many animals are forced to live horrible, lonely lives in the street, fighting for the smallest scraps of food, and yet so many people still refuse to have their pets spayed or neutered. There really is no reason to not have these simple procedures done.

Cats especially are a problem for a few reasons. One reason is the fact that they just don't get adopted as often as dogs. Let's face it, dogs have been domesticated a lot longer than cats, and many people seem to prefer them over cats. (I actually like both.) Add this to the fact that cats can have multiple litters every year, and you have a formula for trouble.

Two cats and their offspring can multiply to 80 million in just ten years.

In the words of Bob Barker: "Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered."

I am going to feature animals from our local shelters here at least once a week. These are great cats and dogs who simply want a home to call their own; a place where they can feel safe and loved. Adopting a shelter animal is the best way to get a pet.

Today, we have Autumn and Glory. They reside at the shelter run by Mitchell County Animal Rescue (MCAR).

Autumn is an 8-year-old Golden Retriever. She was surrendered after being with her family for 7 years. Their reason: because she didn't like chickens. So, Autumn cannot be around chickens. Not that hard. She is fine around everything else. She also knows how to sit and stay and she is just the absolute perfect dog for any family. Even though she is 8 years old she is still VERY active and loves to run around and play ball. She also loves to be brushed. Considering her age, Autumn's chances are not real good. Most people come in to shelters looking for puppies or younger dogs. But, if the right person would come along, this girl still has a lot of years and a lot of love to give.

And here we have Glory. Glory has been at the shelter for a while and is getting pretty bored in her cage. She is a very talkative girl who doesn't have that much interest for other cats, but the shelter staff thinks she would be fine in a home with others. She does not try to attack them or anything, just gives a warning sound if they get to close. Glory is a Domestic Medium Hair and is around 2 years old. She loves to be petted and held. This girl really deserves a second chance, and her time is running low with kitten season fast approaching.

I started this business officially back in December, helping out a couple friends with their dogs. I am now fully insured and bonded and am out there for the general public. I am looking forward to making this my full-time career.

My rates are posted here, and any changes will be reflected there immediately. I will be posting updates and stories about my "adventures" in pet sitting here, as well as photos of pets I will be taking care of.
